Carthage coastguard speedboat docks in Mahdia to assist in rescue efforts

(TAP) - The coastguard speedboat Carthage docked Tuesday at the fishing port of Mahdia to assist in rescue operations of boats and fishermen in case of danger, announced the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources Akissa Bahri.

In a statement to the press, on the sidelines of a visit to the region focused on issues related to the agricultural sector, the minister said that the presence of the navy launch aims to preserve the lives of fishermen and ensure the effectiveness of rescue operations.

She added that the support given to the efforts of regional authorities in the area of maritime rescue was carried out in coordination and cooperation with the Ministries of Agriculture and Defense.

Several accidents have been recorded off the sea in the governorate of Mahdia, including the sinking of a fishing vessel 'Marzouk Mahdia' on September 10 which resulted in the death of 10 fishermen. The region has nearly 6,000 fishing vessels, including 1,633 in the delegation of Chebba. The sector employs nearly 8,600 marine fishermen and produces more than 120 thousand tonnes of fish.
