ALGIERS- The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohamed Abdelhafid Henni, indicated that the National Bureau of Cattle Feed and Poultry Breeding will produce quantities of white meat at a price of 320 dinars per kilogram.

Also this week, orders were given to the National Office for Cattle Feed and Poultry Breeding to market quantities of this product at a price of 320 dinars per kilogram.

Concerning the red meat sector, the Minister of Agriculture indicated that the sector will organize a meeting with all the representations of the red meat production federations, the National Council for the production of red meat as well as the actors to find possible solutions with the state’ support.

The minister reveals the reasons for the rise in meat prices

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Mohamed Abdelhafid Henni said high meat prices are not justified especially in light of stable feed prices in the global market.

In a statement to the press on the sidelines of the celebration of World Nutrition Day, the minister stressed the need to reduce the number of intermediaries in the meat market to control prices.

In addition, the Minister of Agriculture added that it was necessary to regulate the red meat market and limit intermediaries, which he considers to be “the main reason for the rise in prices”.

In the same context, Henni also revealed that the high prices of lamb are due to the large number of intermediaries in retail sales. “The profit margin is up to 800 DA per kilogram at the retailer, compared to buying from breeders.

Finally, the Minister of Agriculture considered that the increase in the price of white meat is unjustified, especially with the stability of the prices of raw materials, such as; corn and soy, which did not increase between March and October, in addition to the efforts made by the State, such as: the cancellation of the value added tax to motivate poultry farmers, subsidizing market prices and connecting agricultural investors to electricity.
